George Clooney Arrested for Free Speech

George Clooney Arrested for Free Speech

If you pay for a building filled with foreigners calling themselves “the embassy,” who owns it?

Actor George Clooney recently decided to test the limits of Free Speech in the District of Criminals this Friday when he knowingly remained on a piece of earth despite threats of kidnapping by agents of the state. Those agents were given orders to kidnap and cage anyone who crossed a line which exists only in their imaginations. Clooney was totally peaceful and even aided in his own kidnapping because he wanted to bring attention to his cause: helping some oppressed people in Africa live free. In his act of civil disobedience, he brought attention to an arguably bigger issue: the caging of political activists who courageously speak truth to power and use as their soapbox public property for which they are forced to pay.

With the recent passage of what’s being called “the Indefinite Detention bill,” which permits agents of the state to secretly cage, torture, and kill any person for any reason, it is likely that stars such as Clooney are among the privileged few who have little to risk when doing this type of activism. Were he to make this controversial statement in a speech, he would be putting his life and freedom at much greater risk, but fortunately actions speak louder than words.

I cheer Clooney’s goal of peace and freedom for people in Africa, but I hope he will have the same courage to speak in support of complete freedom for all individuals.

198 Methods of Nonviolent Action by Gene Sharp

Dr. Gene Sharp compiled the following methods of Nonviolent Action and published them in his 1973 book, The Politics of Nonviolent Action, Vol. 2: The Methods of Nonviolent Action. The book outlines each method and gives information about its historical use.

On Friday at 1PM I’ll be discussing “Nonviolent Action in the Shire” at the 2012 Liberty Forum in the Crowne Plaza Hotel’s Ampitheatre with Ian Freeman and Pete Eyre.

Wikipedia on Sharp:

Sharp’s key theme is that power is not monolithic; that is, it does not derive from some intrinsic quality of those who are in power. For Sharp, political power, the power of any state – regardless of its particular structural organization – ultimately derives from the subjects of the state. His fundamental belief is that any power structure relies upon the subjects’ obedience to the orders of the ruler(s). If subjects do not obey, leaders have no power.

He has been featured in the New York Times as the “Shy U.S. Intellectual Created Playbook Used in a Revolution,” the Nation Magazine profiled him as a “Nonviolent Warrior“. Gene Sharp is Senior Scholar at the Albert Einstein Institution and founded the Institution in 1983. AEI is where this following list is republished from: Continue Reading →

FEMEN Activists Face Up To Four Years Imprisionment

KIEV, UKRAINE: FEMEN activists face a criminal case in a court in the Ukrainian capital Kiev for their topless protest on the balcony of the Indian ambassador’s residence on January 18, during which they tore down the Indian Tricolour flag.

The activists were protesting against India’s alleged visa crackdown against women from some former Soviet states. The government has reportedly asked the country’s diplomatic missions in the Ukraine to tighten the overview of visa applications by women aged 18-40 in an attempt to curb the inflow of sex workers to India

The FEMEN protesters, baring their breasts even in sub-zero temperatures, climbed the balcony of the ambassador’s residence with placards bearing slogans such as ‘Ukraine is not a bordello’ and ‘We are not prostitutes’.  They are being prosecuted on the grounds of the offense under Part 2 of Art. 296 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, as well as an offense under Part 2 of Art. 338 (Violation of state symbols) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Ukranian police said the activists might end up in prison for up to four years.

FEMEN declares idiotic motives of the criminal case and insists on its inviolable right to hold peaceful protests, anywhere and anytime, as bequeathed to us by the great Gandhi.

What if the GOP is Pulling the Wool Over the Eyes of Republican Voters?

Fox News has seen it fit to fire Judge Andrew Napolitano. His show “Freedom Watch” was, in my opinion, the only news program on Fox, perhaps on television, worth watching. He delivered the freedom message with great eloquence, consistency and integrity. He is certainly, again in my opinion, a much more watchable and likeable host than Bill O’Liely or Sean Scammity. He simply makes a lot of sense to me when he speaks. Continue Reading →

Colorado Tax Resister Faces 180 Days For “Tax Evasion”

Douglas Bruce, creator and operator of Active Citizens Together and author of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, used to spend much of his time passing out pocket-size U.S. Constitutions to high school seniors and graduates.  The government is claiming that Mr. Bruce ‘failed to report’ the income from his nonprofit, Active Citizens Together.  The jury convicted him of 3 felonies and 1 misdemeanor, and sentenced him to 180 days in jail and 6 years of probation.

The Wall Street Journal reports that, “…he will have to turn over his computer files, bank accounts, and state and federal tax returns to probation authorities.”  ”His lawyer, David Lane, said that Mr. Bruce was unfairly targeted because he has been a thorn in the side of tax officials.”

In an interview Mr. Bruce, maintaining position on his innocence of wrong-doing, stated he would appeal the charges, claiming, “I will prevail.”
