George Clooney Arrested for Free Speech

George Clooney Arrested for Free Speech

If you pay for a building filled with foreigners calling themselves “the embassy,” who owns it?

Actor George Clooney recently decided to test the limits of Free Speech in the District of Criminals this Friday when he knowingly remained on a piece of earth despite threats of kidnapping by agents of the state. Those agents were given orders to kidnap and cage anyone who crossed a line which exists only in their imaginations. Clooney was totally peaceful and even aided in his own kidnapping because he wanted to bring attention to his cause: helping some oppressed people in Africa live free. In his act of civil disobedience, he brought attention to an arguably bigger issue: the caging of political activists who courageously speak truth to power and use as their soapbox public property for which they are forced to pay.

With the recent passage of what’s being called “the Indefinite Detention bill,” which permits agents of the state to secretly cage, torture, and kill any person for any reason, it is likely that stars such as Clooney are among the privileged few who have little to risk when doing this type of activism. Were he to make this controversial statement in a speech, he would be putting his life and freedom at much greater risk, but fortunately actions speak louder than words.

I cheer Clooney’s goal of peace and freedom for people in Africa, but I hope he will have the same courage to speak in support of complete freedom for all individuals.

Syrian Actress Speaks Out Against Bashar Al Assad

The Washington Post writes on Monday that women are being impacted heavily in the massacres taking place in Syria, and in return they are making an even bigger impact on the dialogue of peaceful protest. A crowd of men and women gathered Monday in mass protest against the massacre that took place the day before. Many women did not wear hijabs, a facial covering traditionally worn by women in that area.

Here’s a video of them protesting this week chanting anti-government slogans:

Here’s actress-turned activist Fadwa Sulayman, also seen without a hijab, talking about a hunger strike in which she is participating in order to draw attention to the violent repression by state agents in Syria:

In the video, the Fadwa calls for more protests outside of the embassies and hunger strikes to support the freedom of speech by the people against state agents.

Japanese Whaling Short Quota, Blame Peaceful Resisters

There were definitely sabotage campaigns behind the figure."
Japanese Fisheries Agency Official

The BBC reported on Friday that with the season over, the Japanese Fisheries Agency announced their whalers accumulated less than a third of their annual goal. In total, 266 minke whales were caught and one fin whale. Though there has been an international ban on commercial whaling for over 25 years, their objective is to catch about 1,000 of the mammals annually “for scientific research.”

The agency holds anti-whaling activists responsible for the whalers’ lack of success.

AFP spoke with an agency official who said, “The catch was smaller than planned due to factors including weather conditions and sabotage acts by activists. There were definitely sabotage campaigns behind the figure.”

One group involved in the peaceful resistance is called Sea Shepherd. They trail the Japanese fleet and make attempts to disrupt its hunt by positioning their ship between the harpoon and the whales while spraying water cannons into the air to block whalers from taking accurate shots.

While the agents of the state in Australia have pursued legal action against agents of the state in Japan in the International Court of Justice, the brave activists are being the change they want to see in the world and are having an impact today despite the great risk to themselves.

Stop Showing Up For the War

Can you hear them? The dogs of war are barking. They’re getting very loud. These guys want to fight. They want to fight bad. They’re growling, snarling and salivating as they think about all the glorious death and destruction they can cause. These animals can’t wait to see the people melt. They hunger for the human misery they can cause,. They long to feast upon the mangled and dismembered bodies of their victims and wallow in the radioactive glow of rubble where fabulous cities once stood. This is the mentality of the sub-human leadership in a couple of well known nations. These vicious animals plan on being safe in their hardened bunkers while the peoples of their nations suffer from their arrogance and inept statesmanship. Continue Reading →
