Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul put out a video on his campaign website this week addressing the topic of secession. He calls the idea American in that the United States came into being by an act of secession. He informs listeners that the New England states talked about secession in the early 19th century, and nobody questioned their right to do it. Paul underscores the fact that a state’s right to secede gives the federal government motivation to restrain its power. He also teaches listeners an important lesson in history as he recounts the story of how the pledge of allegiance came to be and why that “One nation, indivisible” section may not be such a good thing.
