News from the Fringe

militiaVia Drudge, some news from the movement’s fringe:

From the story: “Four members of an anti-government group have been arrested on charges that include money laundering, tax evasion and weapons possession, federal prosecutors said Friday.”

Those arrested were members of something called the “Sovereign Movement,” and believe that “government licenses, taxes and currency are invalid.” Sounds like they might have read former LP presidential candidate Michael Badnarik’s book, which apparently sounds similar themes.

Incidentally, Badnarik’s book has been endorsed by another former presidential candidate, Ron Paul. From Paul’s “forward“(sic): “Good to Be King” will serve as needed ammunition for libertarians and constitutionalists committed to resisting tyranny in America. I commend Michael Badnarik for authoring a compelling text on the foundations of liberty in America.”

I hope the Sovereign Movement wackos weren’t taking their inspiration from Paul or Badnarik, but who knows?

Call me kooky but I also believe that “government licenses, taxes and currency are invalid,” in a sense. Like currency, government is only possible if people have confidence in it so I would rather if people just stopped believing in it.No doubt this is the fringe but I don't put my faith in a news article based on a press release by the feds.Great to have you posting here, Greg.

I have had online run-ins with these sovereignty guys and, while I'm all for opting out, these guys really seem to think they have the silver bullet against government intrusion in their lives and I just don't buy it. They advise people to take out bonds on themselves and to refer to Maritime Law when getting pulled over, etc… Honestly I just think that it is an income-generating scheme. They always sell their information as foolproof but I have yet to see any YouTube vids of this stuff working.I'm not even saying that the entire thing is nonsense, I am just saying that it sure seems to be ignored by the authorities. I've asked a couple of cops I've known in the past about it and neither one has ever even heard of Maritime Law.
