Hanging out with Liberty on Tour

Welcome to the Shire, fellas! Looking forward to working with everyone to build strong peaceful communities that can replace dangerous governments. Ademo Freeman, Beau Davis and Pete Eyre are travelling New Hampshire during their Free State Friendship Tour with LibertyonTour.com. They were nice enough to interview me about the Civil Disobedience Evolution Fund where I’m the managing director. Here is what Ademo posted:

Jason Talley, who partook in Motorhome Diaries with Pete and myself, is the managing director of the Civil Disobedience Evolution Fund (CDEvolution). An organization that – per its website, “works to restore freedom and support liberty by acting as a bridge between liberty activists and supporters. The fund works primarily in an administrative support function with volunteers to communicate directly with activists to ensure that they are supported and the event is a success.” We had the pleasure to reunite with Jason while in Grafton and took that opportunity to discuss CDevolution’s activists.

We support activists, the good people who disobey bad laws.

Ademo continues:

As an activist who’s been caged for non-compliance I can’t stress enough the importance of such an organization. They do great work now but the good people who disobey bad laws could always use more support, consider donating to the CDEvolution fund today.

Here’s my interview where I discuss the Civil Disobedience Evolution Fund:

Emperor Evan’s 2nd Wave Civil Disobedience

Ian Freeman, a fellow director of the Civil Disobedience Evolution Fund, had some nice things to say about Evan (pictured on the right with me and Bob “Weeda Claus” Constantine) at Free Keene.com to accompany a Liberty of Tour video featuring the Free Grafton Emperor:

If the first wave of liberty-lovers doing civil disobedience were people like Russell and Kat Kanning and Lauren Canario, with six heroic arrests under his belt, Evan Pierce may be the most prolific disobedient/noncooperative of the “second wave”. (New waves are necessary as each person can only take so many charges before life gets far more difficult, due to multiple convictions.) Evan’s actions are always very inspiring, as you will surely see. Evan moved to New Hampshire a few years ago from Austin, Texas and immediately jumped into the world of civil disobedience and noncooperation. This video covers his recent arrest at Grafton superior court for wearing a paper hat as well a prior arrest in Keene for smoking cannabis during Pumpkin Fest. Evan is one of the bravest activists in New Hampshire. If you love freedom, whether you are interested in civil disobedience, street theatre, media or politics, you should follow his advice in this video and move to New Hampshire! (courtesy Liberty on Tour):

In addition to being my Free Grafton neighbor Evan and I are fellow members of the Peaceful Assembly Choir. We met during my tour with the Motorhome Diaries and were both part of the Liberty Caravan to New Hampshire in 2009.

The Bay Area Voluntaryist Resource Group

This photo of my Bay Area Voluntaryist friends made me smile. For several months after the Motorhome Diaries concluded in San Francisco and before I traveled to New Hampshire with the Liberty Caravan I lived in the Bay Area. There I met new voluntarists allies and friends at monthly meetings and other outings.

It’s great to see Teresa and Alex doing outreach, especially when it’s behind a sweet looking new banner designed by Garland of Eclectic Circle.

Wikipedia has a good overview on voluntarism which, like anarcho-capitalism, is frequently associated with the colors gold and black. The orange likely represents mutualism and the red, anarcho-syndicalism. The color of the banner looks like sea-green, a color used by the Levellers.

More Social Networking Options

The chaos over at Bureaucrash Social has many in the freedom movement considering other social networking options.  I’ll be honest, the move by CEI to install a conservative as Crasher-In-Chief has given me a lot of laughs over the last few days.  I don’t want to seem insensitive to Jason, Pete, Xaq and others who have given a lot of effort to Bureaucrash over the years but anyone who has been watching the discussions over there has to be at least a little bit amused by some of the antics.

I do not think that the conservative hordes had any idea what they were getting themselves into or just how much energy and dedication our side has.  The heroes and heroines are simply to numerous to acknowledge individually but they are many.

Some new social networking options are appearing and, as Mike Lowry pointed out in the comments section of that post, I neglected to mention Anarch.Me previously.

I enjoy Anarch.Me and have actually been a member there since before I found Bureaucrash Social.  The site has suffered from lack of discussion until very recently but has really been coming into its own over the last few days.  I did not cover Anarch.Me in that earlier post because I am not convinced that it can serve the same role that Bureaucrash Social did as the name (Anarch.Me), while very appealling to me, could turn off the Ron Paul Republicans and Libertarians.  So, while I do not believe that it will ever be a great site for educating statists, I do think it can be a fine hangout for discussing our activities, exchanging knowledge, etc…

Another option, this one not even a day old, is a mirrored copy of Bureaucrash Social created by Dan Patrick whose wife gave Jason and Pete their tattoos at the beginning of their cross-country Motorhome Diaries journey.  Dan says that he began the new site to enable people unhappy with what the original site has become “to be able to almost seamlessly transition” to the new site.  Dan has been one of the most vocal (well, figuratively…) opponents to the takeover of the original Bureaucrash Social.

The final social networking site that I will cover here has not even officially opened for business yet.  BlackVanguard.net is a project of the Center for a Stateless Society.

BlackVanguard.Net is being built by the folks from C4SS.org. It will be a consolidated community platform for market anarchist social networking, activism and fundraising.

We’re building the site with Drupal, assorted social networking modules for Drupal and the CiviCRM constituent relationship management system. Because CiviCRM has a particularly wide scope of features, the expectation is that “development” will in some ways continue long after the official launch of the site as we gradually build the skillbase to put it to progressively more effective use.

I was able to score a special invitation (thanks Noor!) to poke around and there is not much to see yet with Beta testing ongoing.  The name is wicked and I am sure that the site will be as well, as several good people are involved in it.

UPDATE:  Kevin Dean (Man, do we ALL live in motor homes or what?) has been making a lot of improvements to Fr33agents.net and it is really come together very nicely.  That site seems to be fully-functional now.  Great work, Kevin!

Alongside Night More Timely Than Ever

When I first read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged back in my junior high school days, my biggest gripe with the book was that its antagonists were too far-fetched to be taken seriously.  Now, twenty-five years later, I realize that I erred in this judgment.  J. Neil Schulman’s prophetic Alongside Night is another one that seems to get better and better with age, and for the same sad reasons.

The events depicted in Schulman’s debut 1979 novel are now eerily familiar.  From the website

The American economy is in freefall. Markets are crashing. Inflation is soaring. Bankruptcies, foreclosures and unemployment are up, and even defense contracts are going overseas. Foreigners are buying up everything in America at firesale prices while gloating over the fall of a once great nation. Homeless people and gangs own the streets. Smugglers use the latest technology to operate bold enterprises that the government is powerless to stop, even with totalitarian spying on private communications. Anyone declared a terrorist by the administration is being sent to a secret federal prison where constitutional rights don’t exist.

I have bought dozens of used copies of Alongside Night over the years.  I give them to libertarians or science fiction fans and explain Agorism in an attempt to win a few converts.  Congressman Ron Paul recently gave the book a nice plug saying that it, “may be even more relevant today than it was in 1979. Hopefully, this landmark work of libertarian science fiction will inspire a new generation of readers to learn more about the ideas of liberty and become active in the freedom movement.”

The 30-year anniversary of its release is an exciting time for the book’s fans.  Schulman recently met up with the Motorhome Diaries and had a chat with Pete Eyre.  A massively multi-player online game is in the works and Schulman finished writing the screenplay a few months ago in the expectation that it could soon become a feature film.  Another very exciting development is that a graphic novel version is underway and will be illustrated by Scott Bieser who did such a great job on L. Neil Smith’s The Probability Broach.

Motorhome Diaries Crew Arrested

All three members of the Motorhome Diaries crew were taken into custody a few hours ago in Mississippi.  Jason Talley, Pete Eyre and Adam Mueller have been traveling around the nation in their recreational vehicle filming a real-time documentary “searching for freedom in America.”

They have yet to find it.

  • Adam Mueller – Disorderly Conduct and Disobeying an Officer
  • Pete Eyre – Possession of a Beer in a Dry County
  • Jason Talley – Disorderly Conduct, Disobeying, and Resisting Arrest

The story can best be followed at FreeKeene.com.  Send money at their Donations page, spread the word and if you know a Mississippi attorney who is not a not-to-be-trusted “backwoods, Southern lawyer” then use your charm on him.
