(A) Shield from State Agents

#OccupyOakland protestors were prepared to be met with violence from agents of the state on Jan 28, 2012.

In Oakland,

Lee Romney reports from the LATimes:

More than three-fourths of the 360 protesters taken to jails were cited for failing to disperse or “remaining at the scene of a riot,” jail records showed. They have since been released.

Of those arraigned Tuesday, four were charged with felonies, including assault on an officer.

Peaceful Revolution in Egypt Roadblocked by Former Allies

This excerpt from an article by AFP today:
————————————————————————–
Islamist and secular protesters stood side by side in Tahrir Square during the 18 days of protests that toppled Mubarak in early 2011.

But tensions have risen between them since parliamentary elections propelled the long-banned Muslim Brotherhood to the centre stage of politics, with its Freedom and Justice Party now controlling 47 percent of the assembly.

Secular protesters accuse the Islamists colluding with the ruling military to maintain their new-found power.

“Badie, you are selling the revolution!” the anti-military protesters chanted, in reference to Mohammed Badie, the Islamist movement’s supreme guide.

“The Muslim Brotherhood youth are blocking all roads to the parliament, preventing the anti-military protesters… There are huge numbers of them standing in rows like militias,” one anti military protester told AFP.

Riot police was also deployed near the parliament building were MPs were holding a session.

#OccupyOakland Move-In Day

In Oakland this Saturday, protestors attempted to occupy a building to set up a new headquarters since their encampments have been destroyed by agents of the state. At their peak, about 2,000 protestors were assembled in the streets, singing songs and marching with banners. On every front, they were met by lines of police in riot gear who were putting up fences and pointing guns at the protestors in order to restrict their freedom of movement. During the late afternoon, marchers stopped about 100 feet away from a police line and stood their ground with shields made of metal dumpster-lids and painted with peace and anarchy symbols. The police then began throwing flash grenades into the crowd of peaceful people. OccupyOakland medics quickly came to the aid of the injured, but police moved in seconds later to forcibly scatter the crowd, leaving their victims motionless on the ground.

PSU English Teacher Censors Protest

Friday, December 9, 2011, some activists and I attended a pro-2nd Amendment demonstration. Counter-protestors had assembled in front of the school by the time I arrived. As you can see in the video, the teacher who organized the event and made the signs, Robin DeRosa, silenced the protesters. What do you think?
