The basics of Texas Hold’em

The object of the game is to make the best hand of cards you can. When playing poker, it is a common rule that the higher the hand, the better the player. Naturally, the player with the highest hand, the winner, is the tournament winner.

How to play Texas Hold’em

Typically, there are two blinds that are added during the game. The player to the immediate left of the dealer puts in the small blind which is generally something like a dollar amount. Then, the player to the left of the small blind puts in the big blind which is usually a full bet.

After the blinds are put in, the dealer deals each player two cards face down. While the dealer does this, the blinds are released from the middles of the table, in back position. Following this, the dealer puts five cards into the middle known as the flop which can be used by any player. The player can use as many cards as he wishes, provided that there are sufficient cards for everyone.

After the flop, a round of betting begins with the players showing their cards. The first one to bet is the one who is immediately to the left of the dealer. This is often referred to as making a call. If the dealer has something like a Queen high, then most players tend to call being the first to act having a poor hand. However, there are situations where a person would fold to a bet and preserve the blinds.

After this betting round, the dealer again puts in the middle of the table a card known as the turn. This is again followed by a round of betting.

Once the betting is completed, a card is burned by the dealer and no more cards will be dealt. At this point, it is possible to go into a showdown wherein the player is forced to either burn another card or expose their cards. If during a showdown a player burned their third card, the player is declared the loser of the game. The thing is that once a player goes into a showdown, the player is not allowed to change the cards that he or she has. The player is given a limited amount of time to sort out the cards in their hand. Once this time is up, the cards are compared with the other cards and the best hand wins. The bottom hand is then given the pot.

A limited number of cards are then revealed and the player with the best hand wins the pot. The hand ranking for Texas Hold’em is the same as other poker games, simply secondary being the Ace. The next rank would be King, then Jack, then again the Ace. Just to clarify, the Ace can be used as high or low, depending on the position. In the event that two players have the same hand, it goes to the person with the highest card.
